FES Outreach Clinic
What is Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)?
FES is a means of producing contractions in muscles paralysed due to central nervous system lesions by means of electrical stimulation.
In functional electrical stimulation, electrodes are placed on the surface of
the skin above the peripheral nerves that supply the paralysed muscle.
The electrodes can also be implanted in the peripheral nerves themselves.
Electrical impulses are delivered to stimulate the nerves to produce
contractions in the paralysed muscles, the aim of this is to restore
muscular function.
FES can be beneficial in stroke, spinal cord injury, head injury, cerebral palsy
and multiple sclerosis.
